My Perm's One Month

So it's been about a month since I got my hair permed. I decided to go for a perm because I wanted my hair to be manageable without compromising its length. The curls make my head feel lighter compared to straight hair which gets quite heavy and not to mention quite flat too (I don't have much hair). I love my curls! Now that it's been a month the real perm has kicked in - meaning the curls are more loose and looking more relaxed.

Thanks Lindsay!

However even though this is my second time getting a perm, I realized a few things.

Pros:
  • You shampoo less. I don't have to technically wash my hair as often. Washing your hair too often is bad for you anyway cause it gets rid of the oil in your scalp and as a result your scalp will produce even more oil to replace what has been lost. Same goes with washing your face with face cleansers daily. Wash every now and then but on most days just wipe with a damp cloth.
  • A perm makes your highlights look good. The tip of my hair has blond highlights but that's from the original color fading. It looks good on the curls and I get a lot of people asking if I redyed my hair recently. I haven't dyed my hair in quite a while actually. The faded highlights also make my perm stand out more.
  • You look older/dressier. In some ways it could make you look more your age or more mature. A the same time it also works as an accessory. Permed hair somehow gives the impression that you are more dressed up than you really are.
  • They last long - but not too long. A hairdresser of mine in the past told me that depending on your hair a perm can last anywhere from 3-6 months. I think my previous one lasted probably around 4-5 months. At that point I was looking forward to a new hair style already so the timing was good.

Cons:

  • The process. It takes about two hours of putting rollers in your hair and soaking your hair with chemicals. The chemicals stink and they reapply the chemicals after the rinse. Each time you'd sit and wait for a while after the rinse. It could be a painful process for people with sensitive scalps. The pain for me was mild; I was able to bear with it but I have a dry patch on my scalp so it stung a bit.
  • Spending money on hair products/perm. Since a perm needs special care it requires a few products. I guess it's not much of a difference for those who normally buy special hair care products, but for myself permed hair is the only time I shop for more than just shampoo and conditioner. Permed hair needs to be moisturized so I've bought hair lotion, hair mousse, and curl scrunching gel. My favorite products are: hair mousse by Dove and the curl defining lotion by Marc Anthony. I use Pantene for conditioner but any conditioner should be fine as long as you switch it up every once in a while so your hair doesn't get used to it. And of course the perm itself can also be quite costly.
  • It attracts flies? This is not due to dirty hair. Rather hair that smells rather good with all that hair product. I've been harassed by a huge fly at work for 2 and a half weeks already. It may not be the best hair to have for the summer due to bugs and heat.
  • Tangles. Don't expect to run your hand through it or comb it.

You look so pretty! I got a perm for the first time ever last summer and found it to be surprisingly low-maintenance. My miracle product was a curl-defining leave-in conditioner by Garnier--cheap, moisturizing, and provided definition without making my curls crunchy. I also found myself spending less time with a hairdryer and just letting my hair air-dry.

I'm about to go get the first perm I've had in more than ten years. My mom's been conned into taking me as my birthday is coming up, and though she's the one who used to push me into the salon for perms as a child, she is already gearing up to say "I told you so" in the event that I don't like it.
I appreciate that you posted your pic!
As a stylist I have a good hunch that perms have come a long way, as have my ability to clearly communicate what I expect. I am optimistic but pictures of modern perms such as yours are a big help! Thanks! I get curls today at 1pm. :)

Hey Chandra, I'm sure you'll enjoy your perm! : ) To get the more relaxed curls you gotta wait a month cause it does come out more curly at first. There are a few different perms out there so check out lot's of photos to see what you like or ask for recommendations. By the way, some photos of curls aren't perms - they're done with the curling iron. It's hard to tell sometimes but your hairdresser will let you know what's doable or not. Good luck!
