Cheong Sam just means 'long dress.' I decided to google up some images of this Chinese traditional dress but didn't have much luck finding the really nice ones. A few of them look pretty nice and as always I find nice things that stand out about each one. I am also looking into purchasing my very first Cheong Sam or qipao (same thing) for the wedding reception.

I actually like the pattern on this one. However, I'm not sure how the Chinese elders would like the part where a big gap exposes part of my chest.

A nice design especially where the buttons are off to the side but the pattern reminds me of the red background with gold dragons that you typically find in Chinese restaurants.

The way the the collar is sewn creating that tear drop in the middle looks pretty cool.
This one is quite simple. Maybe a little too Miss Hong Kong pageant (Is she?). I do like the idea of the red flower in her hair.

The design is quite nice. Maybe without the sleeves. I would look so Miss Hong Kong in one of these.

Any nice qipaos that you've seen on the internet? Send me some photos or you can let me know what styles are in... or perhaps where I can get one.

I think my focus isn't on the dresses ... but they look quite nice. Did you take a glance at the ballpark cost?
How many dresses are you planning to wear that day?
Though red is typically the color for weddings, doesn't mean you have to stick with that. I've been to weddings where they wore a completely white qipao. And I think the green color is actually a pretty good choice, though the design is a bit out there for a wedding. The only thing is that I think the material should be the satin-y one because that makes it more formal while some of the other flowery ones are pretty, but could blend in as one of the guests.
Blogrolled you!
M: Probably 3 dresses at most. Prices anywhere from $30-$100 from what I've seen so far.
grapefruit: I think in my lifetime I'll wear a red qipao only once for the significance of the occasion. maybe I'll wear a green one to yours. Quite challenging to find a well fitted one.
I like the green one too. Also one of my fav colours so I'm biased too.
I think the first one depends on how much props OUT of the chest opening.
Remember it's yours and Stephen's wedding and no one else's =) Wear something because it's what you like best, not because of what others tell you you should wear.
I like those buttons too. It would be nice if they can be incorporated with the green dress but I don't think they match.
first of all, congrats! i was seeing some wedding-related updates on fbook, but didn't really stop to check any of them out - too many updates to catch up on.
have you checked the store on main st in chinatown? it's a few stores in (south) from hastings. i've never been inside, but know that people have shopped for wedding qipao there. they have an awesome collection and tailor for free.
you know what, i saw a qipao that was REALLY nice on this tv show (rich weddings, poor weddings) and its something like this;

i LOVE this dress and i so wanna get it for my wedding. but u could try too :)
Selena: Yup, never know how they look til you try them on. Since most of them are made in China they're all slightly off either in length or width.
Shauna: Thanks for the dress suggestion. I think the style is interesting case of the collar that pops up. Though maybe not the colors. I think you'll good in that one tho since it looks like it suits someone taller.
actually you can find some pretty good designer in india at good price to tailor your needs.
quelle: thanks - Yea I should definitely check out chinatown again.
Leon: Would be cool to get it done in India. Too bad I'm not there anymore haha. Jennifer says don't get your wedding dress done there tho cause the quality and style's not great.
Wow the green one is beautiful... not something you usually see! My favorites are still the traditional red one of the gold one.
I can't see Shauna's link =(
Yeah everybody's body sizes are so different. The chest opening can be so drastically different on each individual. You're not getting it tailored?
i think the red/gold gives off a royal look. i quite like most of the designs, but definitely, if it's for a wedding.. a sleeveless cheong sam would look nice. and the red flower in the hair is gorgeous! adds such a modern twist to the outfit.
